Dental Crowns

Crowns are used to restore and enhance teeth that are damaged, or to replace missing teeth. A crown, also called a cap, is used to entirely cover a damaged tooth. A crown not only strengthens the tooth, but it can also dramatically improve the tooth's appearance, shape and alignment.

Crowns may be used to…

• Replace a large filling when there is little tooth structure remaining
• Protect a weak tooth from fracturing
• Restore a fractured tooth
• Attach a bridge
• Cover a dental implant
• Cover a discolored or poorly-shaped tooth
• Cover a tooth that has had root canal treatment

Esthetic Improvements with Crowns & Veneers

Crowns and veneers are used to achieve optimal esthetic outcomes. They can be effectively used to correct teeth that are discolored, misshapen, worn, or even misaligned.

Veneers require less tooth reduction than crowns, but each can provide the same level of esthetics. The deciding factor on which option is best to achieve your smile makeover is determined by the overall health of the teeth to be addressed.

How It's Done

Achieving a successful smile makeover begins with careful planning. Impressions are made from the teeth to be treated and models are then built with idealized shapes and positions for teeth.

The actual teeth are then shaped to allow for crown or veneer placement, and temporary crowns/veneers are cemented into place according to he pre-planned models.

Finally, permanent crowns/veneers are fabricated and cemented into place resulting in your beautiful new smile!

Crowns & Veneers Offer Functional Improvement

Crowns are often used to correct functional issues as well. When teeth fracture, crack, or have large failing fillings, or extreme tooth wear, crowns are the option of choice for restoring the tooth back to like-natural function.

While they also provide beautiful esthetics, crowns are used frequently to save severely damaged teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a dental crown and why might I need one?

A dental crown, sometimes called a tooth cap, is a custom-made restoration designed to entirely cover a damaged, decayed, or weakened tooth. At Advanced Brookline Dental, Dr. Laura Galiazzo frequently recommends crowns to restore a tooth's shape, size, strength, and appearance. You might need a crown if you have a large failing filling with little natural tooth structure remaining, a fractured or cracked tooth, or a tooth that has recently undergone root canal therapy. Crowns are also used cosmetically to cover severely discolored or poorly shaped teeth, and functionally to attach a dental bridge or cover a dental implant. By using modern technology and high-quality materials, we ensure your new crown blends seamlessly with your natural smile while providing durable, long-lasting protection for patients throughout the Greater Boston Area.

Does getting a dental crown hurt?

Not at all! At Advanced Brookline Dental, your comfort is our top priority. Dr. Laura Galiazzo is known throughout Brookline and the Greater Boston area for her gentle approach and commitment to stress-free, compassionate dentistry. Before we begin shaping your tooth for a crown, we will fully numb the area using local anesthesia to ensure you do not feel any pain during the procedure. Our modern technology and techniques allow for efficient, precise treatments that minimize discomfort. After the anesthesia wears off, you might experience some mild sensitivity for a few days, which is completely normal and easily manageable. If you experience dental anxiety, please let our family-oriented team know. We tailor every visit to your needs, ensuring you feel calm, heard, and completely relaxed while we restore your beautiful smile.

How much do dental crowns cost in Brookline, MA, and do you take insurance?

The cost of a dental crown in Brookline depends on the specific material used and the complexity of your individual case. During your visit, Dr. Galiazzo will perform a thorough examination, take photos, and clearly explain all your options with complete honesty and integrity. We will never push for unnecessary treatments. If you have dental insurance, our knowledgeable team will help you maximize your benefits to cover the restorative care you need. If you do not have insurance, do not worry! Advanced Brookline Dental offers affordable in-house membership plans designed to make high-quality, expert dentistry accessible to our community. We are happy to provide a transparent cost estimate and discuss flexible financing options so you can achieve a healthy, confident smile without any financial stress.

How long does the dental crown process take?

Getting a custom dental crown at our Brookline practice typically takes two comfortable visits. During your first appointment, Dr. Galiazzo will carefully prepare your tooth by removing any decay and shaping it to ensure a perfect fit for your new crown. We then take highly accurate impressions of your teeth, which are sent to a premier dental laboratory where your custom restoration is crafted. Before you leave, we will place a temporary crown to protect your tooth and keep your smile looking great. In about one to two weeks, you will return to Advanced Brookline Dental for your second visit. Dr. Galiazzo will remove the temporary cap, check the fit and color of your permanent crown, and securely cement it into place, leaving you with a stunning, fully restored smile.

What is the difference between a dental crown and a veneer, and which is right for me?

Both dental crowns and porcelain veneers are excellent options for achieving a beautiful smile makeover, but they serve slightly different purposes. A veneer is a thin shell that only covers the front surface of a tooth and requires very minimal tooth reduction. Veneers are primarily used for cosmetic enhancements, such as correcting discoloration, minor misalignments, or small chips. A dental crown, on the other hand, covers the entire visible portion of the tooth down to the gum line. Crowns are the ideal choice when a tooth needs significant structural support due to severe damage, large fillings, or extreme wear. When you visit Advanced Brookline Dental, Dr. Laura Galiazzo will evaluate the overall health of your teeth and carefully discuss which option is best to achieve your esthetic and functional goals.
